From the time the city roseroughly 2,000 years ago, according to estimatesuntil its fall between 300 and 500 CE, Ubar grew wealthy as an outpost of the frankincense trade. ![]() British explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes was part of the team that discovered the ruins at Shisr after searching for decades. In the ancient world, that resin was used to make incense for religious ceremonies and medical practices. Lawrence (of Arabia) dubbed Ubar “Atlantis of the Sands” and talked of taking up the search himself, but he never did. When he was unable to identify its exact location, however, he turned to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for assistance in applying orbital. Artefacts from far-away lands have been found and satellite imagery shows tracks crossing the desert and converging on the site. Nicholas Clapp, a filmmaker and archeology enthusiast, had accumulated extensive information concerning Ubar, the fabled lost city of ancient Arabia. Ubar is a tale of legend, a lost city of lore, buried somewhere in Arabia. Whether or not the site is the legendary city, evidence is clear that it was a trading post, and caravanserai for desert caravans traveling the incense route between Arabia and the Mediterranean Sea. Excavations have revealed a fort on the site with eight 10-12 foot tall walls, joined by multiple watch towers that were about 30 feet tall. Ubar (aka Wabar, Imran or Iram of the Pillars) is called out in the Quran as a wicked, many-towered city that God caused to be swallowed up in a massive sand storm. Thomas, who showed great interest in the subject, died before being able to complete his research. In one of the trips he made to the region, the Bedouins living in the desert had shown him well-worn tracks and stated that these tracks led toward the ancient city of Ubar. In the Rub’ al Kahli desert (the Empty Quarter, the largest contiguous sand desert in the world) at the tiny village of Shisr, Oman, ancient remains discovered in 1992 may be the legendary city of Ubar. This was the city known as 'Ubar' by the Bedouins. ![]()
